Refrigeration builders: natural refrigerants, too few engineers

Why refrigeration builders must redesign and tune plants for natural refrigerants, and why engineers for commissioning are scarce.

Natural refrigerants change the dynamics and the control of the plant

What happens. Rules on fluorinated gases ban refrigerants with a high warming potential in more and more equipment (European Commission). Makers move to propane and carbon dioxide (CO₂). The plants behave differently: other pressures, other speeds, and with transcritical CO₂ a high-pressure side that must be controlled carefully. Charge limits for propane shape the designs.

What it costs. Redesign and test of every product family, longer commissioning and risk of poor efficiency if the high pressure is not held at its best point.

Why the usual fix fails. Carrying over the settings of the old plant gives unstable control on the new one. Tuning on each site costs service time that is in short supply.

How a fixed-price remote diagnosis checks it. From plant data of prototypes or first installations (pressures, temperatures, compressor speeds, valve positions), I check where the control is unstable or wasteful and what a model-based high-pressure control would bring. The fixed-price remote diagnosis shows you what to retune first.

Background: Predictive control of process plants

Full order books but no engineers to commission natural-refrigerant plants

What happens. Refrigeration firms have more orders again, while staff are short and the rules on refrigerants tighten. Each new plant with propane or carbon dioxide needs control that is designed and commissioned by someone who knows it.

What it costs. Orders that wait for a start, commissioning engineers who are stretched and plants that are accepted with a setting that is not the best.

Why the usual fix fails. Hiring a control engineer takes a long time in a market with few of them. The firm’s own technicians cannot do control design on top of their daily work.

How a fixed-price remote diagnosis checks it. From your plant drawings, existing control programs and commissioning records, I check which part of the control work can be standardised or done remotely. The fixed-price remote diagnosis gives you a plan with the work split into parts.

Check it on your plant first: a fixed-price remote diagnosis

EUR 4,500 net · 5 working days · remote · availability on request · freelance or through temporary agency work

Within a fixed scope and at a fixed price, I review your data, control structure and measurements remotely and tell you whether the problem on this page is behind your symptoms and what fixing it would take. You get a short summary for decision-makers and a technical report for your engineers.
