Calculations and simulations behind unit and plant certificates need specialists

What happens. A certificate for a generating unit or a whole renewable plant rests on calculations and simulations: how the plant behaves at a grid fault, how it follows set values, what it feeds in. Each manufacturer sends a different model, and the body has to check it and often rebuild it.

What it costs. Long lead times for the customer, a body that depends on a handful of people who know the models, and bottlenecks at busy times.

Why the usual fix fails. Recruiting such people takes long, and new staff need a year before they trust a model. Standard tools run the model but do not tell if it is right. Asking the manufacturer for more documentation only moves the work.

How a fixed-price remote diagnosis checks it. From sample certification cases, model descriptions and test results I look at which checks can be automated and where a plant model needs to be rebuilt or only validated. The fixed-price remote diagnosis tells you what a repeatable simulation workflow would look like.

Load simulation of wind turbines for certification is slow and thinly staffed

What happens. For a wind turbine certificate, the loads on the structure are simulated for a large number of wind and sea conditions, onshore and offshore. Each run is a time simulation of turbine, control and structure together, and there are many.

What it costs. Weeks of computing and checking per design, a long queue of turbine types, and few engineers who can judge whether the results are plausible.

Why the usual fix fails. More computing capacity runs the same cases faster and does not reduce the checking. Reduced case lists risk missing the critical condition. Models received from the manufacturer arrive in different forms.

How a fixed-price remote diagnosis checks it. From the model description and a sample set of results I look at which cases drive the design loads and how a turbine model with its control can be set up in a standard form. The fixed-price remote diagnosis tells you whether the number of runs could shrink without losing the critical cases. I have worked on wind-turbine control at IAV (an automotive and energy engineering firm).

Check it on your plant first: a fixed-price remote diagnosis

EUR 4,500 net · 5 working days · remote · availability on request · freelance or through temporary agency work

Within a fixed scope and at a fixed price, I review your data, control structure and measurements remotely and tell you whether the problem on this page is behind your symptoms and what fixing it would take. You get a short summary for decision-makers and a technical report for your engineers.
